Safford is an open-pit copper mining complex Freeport describes as a "zero-discharge facility and one of the most environmentally advanced copper mines ever built." According to Freeport, "Growth and expansion opportunities are underway to extend the life of mine for Safford operations."

William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State University, operations in Safford in 2019 generated an estimated $133 million economic impact (direct, indirect, and induced output) in Graham County. Freeport directly employed approximately 1,230 employees at its Safford complex in 2019 (adding in indirect and induced economic activity, Freeport operations in Safford supported nearly 1,900 jobs in Graham County).
